ENGINE

Pumping life into the H2 SUT is a powerful new 6.2L V8 engine that generates a remarkable 393 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque. Numbers most SUVs only dream about. The new engine features lightweight materials like the aluminum cylinder block and uses variable valve timing technology (VVT) to maximize performance and efficiency.

A new powertrain combination helps the 2008 H2 SUT tow 8,200 pounds - a remarkable 22% increase.  A host of other modifications improve performance and efficiency. Like the new electric engine cooling fans that reduce "drag" or the regulated voltage control that maximizes efficiency by changing electrical components only when necessary. Even the electrical wiring in the H2 SUT is more efficient and uses less electrical energy.

For an improved on- and off-road feel, the H2 SUT features a revised steering gear with a quicker ratio. While the new tuned air intake and exhaust systems make the driving experience quieter and more refined. Engineered to meet stringent emissions standards, the H2 SUT’s new engine is not just more efficient, but beats the deadline for the new U.S. federal emissions standards by a year.

SUSPENSION

FRONT

The H2 SUT uses an independent torsion bar front suspension which is excellent on-road and incorporates features that make it even more impressive off-road. High-strength monotube gas-charged shock absorbers, known for durability, grace the front suspensions of the H2 SUT. This system incorporates two rubber cushions called "jounce bumpers" which absorb jolts under normal off-road conditions.

As things get rougher and suspension travel increases, a frame-mounted urethane bumper prevents the suspension from hitting the frame. However, the shock absorbers themselves have integrated bump stop rings that slow the suspension’s travel before it needs to strike this final cushion.

In addition to a 4,000 lb. axle capacity, the front suspension has a large 36 mm diameter tubular front stabilizer bar, in conjunction with a standard tubular 30mm diameter rear stabilizer bar, to help minimize body roll when cornering. The result is a smooth ride, with front-end control that adapts to changing terrain, both on- and off-road,that maximizes traction in all conditions.

REAR

The standard rear suspension on the H2 SUT features a 5-link trailing arm, coil springs and a stabilizer bar. The spring rate is variable from a soft on-road rate, through a transitional rate, to a stiff off-road rate, which helps prevent bump and impact input forces from transmitting into the H2 SUT’s body.

Perhaps the most eyebrow raising aspect of the H2 SUT’s rear suspension is the solid rear axle. Consider this in the context of off-roading. Say you’re crossing a field strewn with boulders. As the back end of your truck rolls over a rock, independent suspension allows the rear tires to rise, but leaves the rear-end housing where it is, and subsequently vunerable to a rock strike. But the H2 SUT’s solid rear axle rises with the rear tires, lifting the rear so you can continue on your way without having felt a thing.

An automatic self-leveling, air suspension system that works in conjunction with an on-board air compressor is an available option for the H2 SUT. It helps keep the H2 SUT level under load, creates a longer suspension stroke for off-road operation and makes for a steeper departure angle when conditions call for it.

H2 SUT TRACRION CONTROL

TRACTION CONTROL

Power is nothing without control. That’s why the H2 SUT offers extraordinary control in the form of a 2-speed, electronically controlled, full-time 4WD system. Perhaps the most advanced system offered on a consumer vehicle. This system incorporates a stronger, improved transfer case, unique in that it offers 4 high lock and true 4 low lock ranges that make the H2 SUT capable of adapting to all types of surface at the touch of a button.

Working in tandem with the 4WD to give you even more control over your H2 SUT is an advanced Traction Control System that’s peerless in the SUV category. Whether off-roading or simply on slippery road surfaces, TCS continually monitors the rotational speed of each wheel. If one wheel is spinning more than the others, TCS applies braking pressure to the spinning wheel to help it regain composure and transfers available torque to the wheels that have traction. Using this system, an H2 SUT with three spinning wheels can still move forward, even on an upward grade of 10%.


OPERATIONAL MODES:

4 HI OPEN
for normal everyday driving on dry road surfaces, allowing the front and rear axles to move at different speeds with a 40/60 font to rear split.

4 HI LOCKED
for semi-slippery surfaces like snow, light sand, gravel or wet areas. This locks the front and rear axles together for additional traction and has a 50/50 front to rear power split.

4 LOW LOCKED
for severe off-pavement use. This locks the front and rear axles together and engages a reduction of the gear ratio to 2.64:1 for controlled rock and obstacle climbing. This mode also has 50/50 front to rear power split.

4 LOW LOCKED & REAR AXLE DIFFERENTIAL LOCKED
for optimal, slow-speed capability while climbing large rocks or steep grades, the rear differential locks the rear axle shafts together sending equal torque to both rear wheels.

NEUTRAL
is the 5th mode, which permits flat towing of the H2 SUT behind another vehicle.

BRAKING SYSTEM

ABS

The 4-channel Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), standard on the H2 SUT, allows enhanced steering control under extreme braking conditions, without tire "lock up." An example of what makes this system so unique is found in the context of driving on gravel roads. After heavy rains, gravel can develop certain patterns. The H2 SUT’s breaks can recognize these surfaces and react accordingly. Bringing you to a controlled stop.


DYNAMIC REAR PROPORTIONING

Another example of the H2 SUT’s advanced braking ability is Dynamic Rear Proportioning. This system modulates the rear brake pressure as needed to ensure that braking is balanced between the rear and front brakes. Further, this helps balance wear and prevents the nose of the H2 SUT from driving downward when braking hard. It’s specifically designed to work seamlessly all the time, without you ever being aware of it while sitting comfortably behind the wheel.


LEFT FOOT BRAKING

The 2008 H2 SUT is engineered to be more responsive to "Left Foot Braking," a technique that allows drivers even better control of their H2 SUT off-road. Usually Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS) and the Traction Control System (TCS) function independently despite sharing the same space. But in the 2008 H2 SUT, the engineers designed a system that allows brake operation (under light application) and TCS to work at the same time.

This is best seen in a rock crawling scenario where a driver, while in 4 low lock, can simultaneously use the right foot to control the throttle and the left foot to control the brake while TCS continues to manage torque across the axles. This allows the driver to precisely control the truck’s speed over rocks, while engine torque still gets to the wheels that have the best traction.


FOLDING MIDGATE

The H2 SUT features a midgate with a power glass window, which makes changing the SUT’s cargo area exceptionally easy. Simply lower the power midgate window, fold down the second row seats and the midgate easily lays into the cabin, creating a pick-up length of 6 feet.* The SUT cargo bed also comes with 4 embedded latches for tie-downs.

ON THE OUTSIDE

H2 SUT

PROTECTION

One of the more functional features of the H2 SUT platform is the full undercarriage protection, which runs the entire length of each vehicle, from nose to tail. It starts at the front with the thick aluminum engine shield. This is followed by a 1in. diameter tubular steel ladder type framework which protects the transmission and catalytic converters. Integral rocker panel protectors, which fit slightly outside the body sheet metal, protect both the under-carriage and sides of the trucks. And with the addition of a transfer case shield and a heavy plastic (non-sparking) fuel tank shield, such complete undercarriage protection provides that even if you’re a HUMMER, the best offense is still a good defense.

FRAME

To build a HUMMER, a strong foundation is a must. The H2 SUT uses a welded ladder-type frame with full-length, box-section side rails and a 3-piece modular design consisting of front, middle and rear sections.


FRONT SECTION

The front section is hydro-formed, making it strong enough to support a 9,000 lb. winch in the integral receiver mount.


MID FRAME

The mid-section is a fabricated and welded, stamped-steel box segment that helps minimize vibrations for a smooth ride.


REAR FRAME

And the hydro-formed, short section, reinforced to handle the weight of a fully loaded vehicle, comes with a standard, integral trailer hitch receiver certified to tow 8,200 lb. The end result is an immensely strong frame with a long wheelbase and a wide, balanced stance. When combined with full underbody and rocker panel protection, you can get to almost anywhere and beyond and back.

CHROME ACCENTS

The SUT comes with a number of chrome accessories and options, allowing you to customize your truck any way you want. Some of them include the bright roof rack crossbars, the chrome hood handles, chrome hood latches, and the chrome door handles.

ON THE INSIDE

INFOTAINMENT

New to the H2 SUT is an optional rear sear overhead DVD entertainment system with an 8-in. screen that comes with a remote control, two wireless headphones and auxiliary audio/video input jacks.

There is also a whole new range of audio choices to keep things interesting. Each system includes XM Radio† with three months of trial service. XM has the programming variety to find out what turns you ON. Whether you want to be entertained or informed, to laugh, think, or sing, XM’s got the perfect channel for you - with the best in commercial-free music, news, sports, talk, comedy, traffic and weather and more.

BOSE® STEREO SYSTEM

Standard audio in the H2 SUT is a Bose® sound system with in-dash, 6-disc CD changer. The Bose® performance-enhanced seven-speaker sound system come standard on both the Base and Adventures series, while the Bose® 5.1 Cabin Surround Sound System comes standard on the H2 SUT Luxury. And there are even rear seat audio controls with headphone jacks that allow the 2nd row passengers to listen to separate audio sources. The sound systems are specifically tuned for the H2’s unique interior by the high-fidelity experts at Bose®.

SEATING

The H2 SUT features premium appointed leather trimmed heated seating, with room for 5 adults. The leather-appointed seats and trim are available in ebony or sedona coloring. Both you and your front passenger can customize your ambient environments, allowing for a difference of up to 30’ between the 2 spaces.

Comfortable cushions make the seats agreeable for long or short trips, and wide door openings in both the front and rear, make it easy to get in and out.

The front seats have 8-way power adjustment for the cushions and the backs, 4-way adjustable lumbar supports and memory settings for 2 drivers. The 2nd row seats have a 60/40 split and also fold flat to create extra space.

TRAILERING

THE H2 SUT HAS A TOWING CAPACITY OF 8,200 LB. IT’S FULL-TIME 4WD TRANSFER CASE SENDS POWER TO THE FRONT AND REAR, ALLOWING THE SUT TO TOW EVEN IN THE TOUGHEST SITUATIONS.*

*Trailer tongue weight should be 10%-15% of total loaded trailer weight, up to 1,000 lb.  Do not exceed the maximum allowable tongue weight for your vehicle.  Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR), which is the total allowable weight of the completely loaded vehicle and trailer including any passengers, cargo, equipment and conversions, is 15,000 lb.  If you’ll be pulling a trailer that, when loaded, will weigh more than 5,000 lb., be sure to use a properly mounted, weight distributing hitch and sway control of the proper size.  If your trailer weighs more than 2,000 lb. loaded then it needs its own brakes, and they must be adequate.  Trailer weight ratings are calculated assuming a base vehicle, except for any option(s) necessary to achieve the rating, plus driver.  The weight of other optional equipment, passengers and cargo will reduce the maximum trailer weight your vehicle can tow.  See your HUMMER dealer for additional details.
